The door is open

Everything that is really great and inspiring is created by the individual who can labor in freedom” – Albert Einstein

For the 4th time, in the span of 10 years, United Arab Emirates is re-opening her friendly doors for migrant absconders. Amnesty returns with pride, and welcome with gusto by the country’s fortunate and unfortunate TNT (tago ng tago). It is a generous 3 months period wherein irregular migrant workers can either legalize their status or leave without facing harsh penalties, i.e, life ban, immigration fine, detention, (I’m not positive on lashing.) Hence, an estimated 300,000 of these “free-lancers” are in the wilderness; their numbers are on the rise like the burgeoning buildings around.

Embassies all over the region are currently bracing themselves for the unsurprising influx of applicants who rush to take advantage of the “special” offer eversince the much awaited program kicked-off last June. Top amnesty seekers are ethnic group from 3rd developing nations namely: India, Pakistan, Sri-lanka, Egypt, Morroco, Indonesia, Sudan, Nigeria, China, Nepal, and yes the Philippines, (
UAE really, is an amazing melting pot of cultures).

I knew lots of “irregular” Pinoys. Mostly Kasambahay (a.k.a. servant or nannies here) who, for troubledsome reasons, absconded from their incensed sponsors. They’ve been a significant piece of my Expat life here. Runaway Women who outlived tough times by both unwavering faith and forlorn hope, by erratic jobs in Hotels, by humane souls who (amidst the risks) refuged and fed their hunger. Out of their blog-material miseries, my eyes were opened and my blessings were dear, for real. I could feel their excitement to re-start a missed life back-home and regain a once lost freedom.
.
I've never been this Blissful.

A man Hollywood loves to hate

“Nothing good been written about me”, American Director MICHAEL (Benjamin) BAY quoted in Gulf News’ yesterday. Dunno if this guy, who typically make cameo appearances in many of his movies was just mocking by the fact that he’s one of the most successful showbiz figure of his time; the youngest, to have a film gross at $1 billion. With a Ferrari, blond playmate girl and a rock-star mansion in America’s posh suburb, mid-life crisis at 42, is still a long-way. His money-making films are notorious for its fast-paced sequences and ultra-kinetic cinematography. Who would forget the bullet-ridden scene in “The Rock” (’96) that launched Nicholas Cage in full action-stardom? The haunting drama behind “The BadBoys “ (’95) - his first, the tremendously-intense “Armageddon” (98) and “Pearl Harbor” (’01)? And the recent universal success of Transformer (’07) beating my perennial favorite Spiderman on its opening (unbelievable! City Center’s Cinestar remain standing seats only on extended weeks - my first time to behold such in my entire movie-watching career). As I google-searched his vast profile, I gathered brief info’s why he’s a regular for “Razzie/ Raspberry award” nomination (Hollywood’s worsest honor, a.ka. Kalabasa award for Pinoys).

A Screaming Director,

His “any late arriving actor is not allowed on my set” rule has prompted rifts with screen goddesses Scarlett Johansson and Kate Beckinsale. While Bruce Wilis posted blog which says “ I’ll never work with him again”. Fictional Actor Vince Chase on the other hand, was so upset to find out that my subject will be making his hands wet for AquaMan 2 instead of James Cameron. Bay is also the center of a controversial song ”The End of An Act” from a local soundtrack which contains the disapproving line “Why does Bay keep on doing movies?”

The Director with ants in his pants,

His camera is never still. His shots rarely last between 2 or 3 seconds. Detractors attacked Bay for shaky quick-cut style. Thus, as his unfailing critics says, his films are more of an eye candy appeal. Beside being a Director for blockbuster movies, he’s into producing horror-genre films (Amytiville and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are just few of his monster products). A music-video director who used to work with black singers Lionel Richie and Tina Turner, he has pioneered the MTV style fast-cut technique into cinema. The same he applied to his TV commercial projects that later gave him coveted plaque to both.

It seems that he is the human counterpart of his gigantic car-robots - The Autobats and the Decepticons, representing his good and bad. As proven, he got the power to control the senses of man as he can likewise lose his and theirs. I can see it now,
HE MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE .
